The True Meaning of 'Being Human'

He is not a wealthy man and has no other business. Like most of us, he has a family to look after. His wife is a yoga teacher and both his daughters are in college. He has little savings.
One would expect a man like him to constantly think of ways to develop his business and make more money. That’s what ‘normal’ people would have done anyway.

But 50-year-old Venkatraman is a different kind of person. He has no such worries. His only concern is to see how he could continue with the Lunch at Re 1 scheme at his hotel.
For over five years, Venkatraman has been giving lunch every day for about thirty persons at his hotel for just Re 1. The beneficiaries are mostly attendants of poor in-patients from the nearby Government General Hospital, who pay just Re 1 for a meal that is priced at Rs 50 for other customers.
Venkatraman may have served at least 40,000 Re 1 meals till date. The prices of food grains, oil, spices and vegetables have gone up many times in the last four years, but the one rupee lunch has remained unaffected.
Venkatraman ensures that the poor get the same meal that his other customers get for Rs 50.
“For other customers, the price has been revised. Five years ago, the cost of a lunch at our hotel was Rs 25; now it is Rs 50,” says Venkatraman, who also gives a 20 percent discount for the disabled.
This extraordinary effort started in 2008 when a woman who had admitted her relative to the general hospital came to his mess to buy idlis for herself and another relative. When Venkat informed her that the idlis were over and suggested dosas instead she told him that since dosas were more expensive, she would not have enough money to buy food for two people and that one of them would have to go hungry. That got Venkat thinking. “I knew I had to do something. Sometimes the patient gets hospital food but it’s their caretakers and relatives who stay hungry. If you look at the profile, they are mostly daily wage labourers who have to go for work and therefore income to watch over their family members at the hospital,” says Venkatraman.
“Initially I had planned to give them a free meal. But then I felt they might be embarrassed, and perceive it as charity. They may also worry about the quality of the food since it is free of cost. Therefore I decided to charge a token amount of Re. 1,” he explains.
Though he is facing financial difficulties, Venkatraman receives solace from the ‘divine blessings’.
“I have the full support of my family in whatever I am doing. My second daughter scored 1085 marks (out of 1200) in her Plus 2 exam. We were unable to admit her in engineering college because we could not afford the fees. But thanks to a person in Ramakrishna Math, she got a seat in a reputed engineering college in Chennai. The management has also given her a fee waiver.
“I have reasons to believe that such good things have happened in my life because of the small acts of service to the poor I have been doing. It gives me great satisfaction,” says Venkatraman.

Meet Sourabh Potdar: An Engineer Who Help Villagers Come Out Of Poverty

Meet Sourabh Potdar: An Engineer Who Left His Comfortable Life And High Paying Job To Help Villagers Come Out Of Poverty!
Sourabh Potdar is an engineer who had a well-paying job. But when he saw the SBI Youth For India Fellowship advertisement in the newspaper it struck him that he didn't want to settle down like a regular person and give a little monetary help as charity. He would rather make some real contribution at the grassroot level. He somehow convinced his family and his fiance about his plans.
His Efforts Having a great interest in trekking, Potdar decided to take a project of rural tourism with BAIF where he was expected to market the village to attract more people to the village as tourists. The project was sponsored by Dorabji Tata Trust. He would go to various schools, colleges and seminars in the nearby cities to educate people about the lesser known place called Jawhar near Thane District, Mumbai.
Since there was not much to sell, he then started working on making the village more interesting. He partnered with various organizations to study their pattern to attract tourists. He started giving lodging facilities to the visitors along with tribal dance and singing performances to attract more people.
Going an extra mile
When he saw that people were not supporting him much in the project, he went to a nearby area and saw various Warli painting artists who were living in poverty. He met Sadanand Nakra, a hearing and speech impaired Warli artist. Nakra carved and painted Ganesha idols for a Sahukar in Jawhar for which he got a meager wage of Rs. 75 every day for 9-18 hours of hard work. He had a family of four to support and it was very difficult for him to earn his daily bread and butter.
Potdar was determined to help the artist, so he researched and found out that Mumbai had a good market for Warli paintings. He grabbed a couple of Sadanand’s paintings and went to Mumbai where he received a positive response. Potdar also connected Sadanand with various clients and managed to sell his paintings for around Rs.1,50,000. Gradually Sadanand’s business picked up and now he has clients across the country.
Earlier he had a small house with no facilities. Now he has purchased a television, bed, cupboard and other basic necessities and the credit goes to Potdar for his efforts.
Thus, Potdar could have easily given up his first project when he got no support from the villagers but he took it as an opportunity and did not give up. That is how we can identify real heroes. They don’t give excuses, they constantly look for solutions. Humanity can surely do with more such heroes.
Why do we always fail to respect true Heros ?
I think he demands nothing from us but let us give him some respect and a little bit recognition.

Ira Singhal, first physically challenged woman to top the civil services exam.

Ira Singhal, a 31-year-old Delhi woman, created history on Saturday by becoming the first person with disability to top the civil service examination in which four of the top five slots were bagged by women.

Ira, who suffers from Scoliosis – a spine-related disorder – is an inspiration for women and disabled people as she overcame her disability to complete her computer engineering, MBA and several other courses. She also worked as Customer Development Manager for Cadbury India Ltd from 2008 to 2010. Ms. earlier worked as a Spanish teacher for a year, as well as a marketing intern in beverage giant The Coca Cola Company.

Long and difficult road
Ira has travelled a long way and fought hard all along. In 2010, despite clearing the civil services exam and qualifying for IRS, she was not included in the service. The government thought that as a candidate having problems with both arms, she was eligible only for IAS and not for any other service.
Ira, who has 62 per cent disability, took the government to the Central Administrative Tribunal and, after a battle, won the case to get inducted into the IRS last year.
“Probably, this would help others in viewing women and disabled in a better way, I want to say to everyone, let your daughters study and work. Let them go out in the world and make something of their lives,” said Singhal.
Singhal, who topped in the general category despite her medical condition, has a lot of hobbies – dance, drama, and travel among them.
Her friend and fellow IRS officer Manudev Jain says Singhal is a ‘shararati’ person. “She plans the pranks, we execute them together.”
a beaming Ira said in Hyderabad where she is undergoing training as an IRS officer. As messages of congratulations poured in, her father Rajendra Singhal and mother Anita said she was an all-rounder and one who was not bogged down by adversities.

8 Important steps You Need to take before you adopt a Dog

Once you’ve decided to welcome a new pet  into your home, make sure you choose the right pup and create a dog-friendly home. follow this 8 steps carefully and create heaven for your pet at your home

1. Determine the Best Dog for Your Family
It’s important to match up the right family with the right type of dog. For instance, if you spend your weekends playing video games and watching TV, a high-strung Weimaraner that needs lots of exercise might not be the best choice. Along the same lines, if you’re living in an apartment or small home without a backyard, a smaller or low-key breed, such as a bulldog, is probably going to be a better fit than a high-energy cattle dog that needs room to run.

2. Prepare Your Home
Dogs are notorious for getting into food, trash cans, and toilets, so do a walk-through of your home to determine if there are any attractive nuisances you should address. The scent of these items is attractive to dogs, and the results are lethal. Just as if you were baby-proofing a house, take the time to dog-proof your home to prevent foreseeable damage or injury.

3. Choose a Vet
It’s a good idea to find a veterinarian before you adopt a dog. Many adoption organizations actually require you to list your vet’s name on their application, so if you have one picked out, it’ll make the adoption process go more smoothly.
Once you’ve chosen your vet, go ahead and ask his or her advice about food brands, trainers, and must-have supplies. While you don’t have to follow every bit of your vet’s advice, it’s a good idea to have professional input before you bring your new pup home.

4. Purchase Supplies
It’s a good idea to have several things on hand before you pick up your dog.Don’t just grab the first items you see, though. It’s a good idea to keep in mind the type and size of dog you plan to adopt – a Chihuahua’s supplies are considerably smaller than those of a Great Bernard, so be sure to look for size specifications and cross-reference those with size information on the dog breeds that have made your short list.
Items to buy include:
High-Quality Food.
Food and Water Bowls.
Collar.
Leash.
Dog Bed.
Dog Crate.
Toys.

5. Adopt Your Dog
After constricting the types of breeds you’d be interested in adopting, call around to the local shelters and rescue organizations to see whether any waiting dogs match your list. In all likelihood, you’re bound to have a fair number of animals to choose from. Ask each rescue organization what their policies are for adoption, and gather any necessary materials before you start your search. For instance, some organizations require proof from the landlord that you’re allowed to have a dog at your apartment, while other organizations require referrals or recommendation letters. In some cases, rescue organizations require home visits before adoption, so it’s important to know the rules before you head out.

6. Settle Your Dog at Home
Once your adoption is complete and you’re able to bring your new pup home let your dog gets a feel for the home, expect a subsequent dip in energy. After spending weeks or months in a high-stress shelter environment, then taking a car ride to a whole new home, the pup is bound to be worn out. Don’t be surprised if he or she spends the first couple days doing a lot of sleeping. Encourage this rest and spend waking time cuddling, playing with, and otherwise loving your new dog. It takes a little while to bond, but as your dog becomes more comfortable, its personality will start to shine, and you’ll be hooked in no time.

7. Invest in Training
Even if your dog came to you fully trained, it’s a good idea to go ahead and sign up for a basic obedience class within the first week of ownership. These classes are helpful to the dog owner and they establish a chain of command within the house. Standard classes through major pet stores typically cost about $100. This may seem like a lot, but the peace of mind provided is definitely worth the expense, and the classes help ease your dog’s mind, too.

8. Head to the Vet
Last, but not least, you need to schedule a vet visit shortly after adopting your pet.The vet visit determines whether there are any health issues you should be conscious of, and it puts your dog on a regular schedule for immunizations. It’s also a good idea to pay for an antigen heartworm test if your shelter just tested for heartworms using the less-accurate antibody test. Use your time with the vet to ask questions and talk about any owner concerns, whether medical or behavioral.

By taking the time to choose the right breed, prepare your home, and seek out professional assistance, you and your family will be equipped with the necessary tools to start dog ownership on the right foot.
